Community Involvement

Employees at Merck Durham understand very well the concept of being a good corporate citizen. Employees at the site are involved in the community in a number of ways. They tutor and mentor at area schools, conduct science experiments at schools, participate in school sponsored events like "Take Your Child to Work Day" and career fairs. They also organize and participate in site blood and food drives, softball games for the developmentally handicapped and other events and activities around the community.

Durham employees are also "Champions for the Environment." They pushed to get the site recycling program up and running. They also participate in Merck's annual Champions for the Environment program, donating usually a Saturday to work with a community environmental stewardship group to complete a project that raises environmental awareness and education.

In 2007, the Triangle chapter of the American Cancer Society held its first Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The Durham site became a presenting sponsor and employees at the site worked to raise $10,000 for that walk, with less than 100 employees at the time! In subsequent years, the site has continued to participate in this event and has consistently been among the top three corporate fundraisers.

In the short time the facility has been in the community, Merck employees have established the site as an integral part of the Durham community.
